Fourth Year Thesis Project: Reconstructing Hope

For my final year thesis project, the project brief was left open for students to dictate exactly what they want to design and work on. Consequently, a comprehensive project brief had to be put together to kickstart the entire project and set the direction. My project was inspired by a tragic event, and the desperate need for future improvement that comes along with it.

Rest in peace Errol Graham 1961-2018

Errol Graham

Errol Graham was living in the social housing of the Woodlands (Pine View) in Radford, Nottingham. He, like many others, relied on benefits to afford the rent, but when his benefits were revoked, Errol Graham was left to starve to death with no means of surviving. He was found dead only when bailiffs came to evict him in June 2018.

He died at age 57, weighing merely 28kg. With a history of depression, his loss of income and housing had a significant impact on his mental health, and led to his untimely death in a system that is ‘not fit for purpose’ (BBC 2020).

His tragic passing served as the greatest motivation for the project, reimagining how the architecture around us can help ease mental struggles and provide more chances for interaction and community cohesion to ensure people are looked after and not left on their own in this harsh world.
